Shop flooring: how to survive the footfall without closing for refurbishment

A retail unit with 5,000 visitors a day sees around one and a half million footsteps over a year. No domestic floor covering will take that. Let's look at what to choose and how to install it without stopping trading.

The load is spread extremely unevenly

This is the key thing to grasp before choosing a material. Footfall in a shop is not smeared evenly across the floor area.

Entrance zone, the first 5–7 metres — 100 % of visitors, plus all the dirt, grit and water from the street. Wear here progresses several times faster than in the rest of the sales floor.

Main aisles between the shelving — 60–80 % of the traffic.

Checkout zone — 100 % of customers, but standing in one place: abrasion from shuffling feet plus point loads from trolleys.

Peripheral areas, corners, the space around fitting rooms — 10–20 % of the traffic.

The practical conclusion: the use class is chosen zone by zone, not as a single specification for the whole site. Otherwise you either overpay for the periphery or end up with a worn-out entrance after eighteen months.

Use classes by zone

Zone Class Reason
Entrance 34 maximum abrasion and moisture
Main aisles 33–34 through traffic
Checkout zone 34 shuffling + trolleys
Sales floor, between shelving 33
Fitting rooms 33 + slip resistance
Back-of-house, stockroom 33–41 wheeled loads

What those figures mean and why the wear layer, not the total thickness, is what decides things — in the article on vinyl flooring use classes.

The entrance zone: where the money is actually saved

The first few metres from the door take up to 80 % of all the abrasive matter that enters the building. Grit works like sandpaper: every footstep puts micro-scratches into the wear layer.

An entrance matting system is the most cost-effective investment in the whole project:

  1. Outside — a grid with a scraper profile that removes coarse dirt.
  2. In the lobby — a module with abrasive fibre.
  3. Inside — a moisture-absorbing textile module, at least 4–6 metres in the direction of travel.

The rule is simple: the system has to cover at least six full steps by the visitor. Anything less and it does not work, and the dirt goes straight onto the sales floor.

Saving money on entrance matting means replacing the floor across the whole sales area several years early.

Zoning with the decor instead of partitions

Vinyl flooring offers a tool that porcelain tile does not: routing the customer with colour and texture.

  • A dark band or a contrasting decor along the main aisle sets the direction of travel intuitively;
  • A wood-look decor in the fitting-room area and around premium categories creates a sense of comfort and increases dwell time;
  • A plain, light-coloured floor visually widens a narrow sales area;
  • A change of texture separates departments without physical partitions.

Technically this is done with inlay work: sheets of different decors are butted together and welded with a rod. For plank-based schemes, glue-down LVT planks in different decors are used.

Refurbishment without closing the shop

The economics of downtime decide the outcome more often than the price of the material. A shop turning over €3,000 a day and closed for a week of works loses €21,000 — more than the entire flooring budget.

Vinyl flooring is laid zone by zone, overnight or at weekends:

  • Night shift. The shop closes at 21:00, a 50–80 m² section is prepared and laid overnight, and at 10:00 the doors open. Glue-down vinyl allows light foot traffic after 24 hours, so the section is cordoned off for the day or the work is scheduled for Friday–Saturday.
  • Section by section. Department by department, with the shelving temporarily moved.
  • Over the existing floor. With no demolition, the dirtiest and noisiest part of the job disappears — how this is done technically.

With porcelain tile none of these scenarios works: wet trades, dust, noise and a minimum of three days before the floor can be loaded.

Point loads from shop fittings

Shelving, display cases, refrigerated multidecks, safes — all of it stands on small-area feet and presses down for years.

What to look at is residual indentation to EN 433: the lower the figure, the better. On our sheet vinyl it is 0.33 mm — the covering recovers once the load is removed and no deep dents remain.

Practical recommendation: put load-spreading pads under heavy fittings. It is cheap and removes the issue entirely.

What to do about wheeled loads

Trolleys, pallet trucks and transport dollies in the back-of-house areas. Requirements:

  • a wear layer of at least 0.4 mm;
  • welded seams — an unwelded edge is the first thing a wheel lifts;
  • in unloading areas, move up to an industrial-grade covering with a raised profile.

Maintenance under heavy use

Daily — mechanical cleaning with a scrubber-drier, a soft pad and a pH-neutral cleaner. Quarterly — deep cleaning. Every 6–12 months — renewal of the polymer protective coating in the entrance zone and along the main aisles.

That last point is often ignored, yet it extends the service life of the floor by one and a half to two times. Renewing the protective coating costs incomparably less than replacing the floor.

What to order

For sales floors, aisles and entrances — commercial sheet vinyl: 2 m wide, minimal seams, class 32–33, Bfl-s1, welded joints. For areas where appearance and atmosphere matter — glue-down LVT planks in a wood-look decor.

FAQ

What use class does a shop need? 33 for the sales floor and 34 for the entrance and checkouts. Peripheral areas can take 32.

How long will the floor last with 5,000 people a day? With class 33–34, a working entrance matting system and regular renewal of the protective coating — 10–15 years. Without entrance matting that figure is halved.

Can the floor be laid without closing the shop? Yes, zone by zone, overnight or at weekends. Twenty-four hours after installation the section is open to customers.

What about the joint between zones with different decors? The sheets are butted together and welded with a rod — the transition is flat, with no trim strip and no trip hazard.

Will the covering take trolleys? Yes, with a wear layer from 0.4 mm and welded seams. In unloading areas an industrial-grade covering is the better choice.
